Manhattan skyline, taken from Frank Sinatra Park, Hoboken, N.J., by Yessenia AlvarezThe New Jersey Historical Society, a statewide museum and library, is beginning a project to record and preserve New Jersey’s response to the events of September 11th. This project, Changed Lives: Understanding New Jersey in the Aftermath of September 11th, will collect stories and objects that demonstrate the impact of these events upon the lives of New Jerseyans.

The Historical Society is seeking donations of the following:

Original or Reprint Photographs (by professional and amateur photographers) of memorial shrines or other public displays erected in honor of the victims during the days and weeks following the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Please include information about where the memorial shrine is located, any other pertinent information about the memorial (e.g. if it is for a particular person, who created it—if known, etc.) and information about who took the picture (name, address, phone number and e-mail address, if available). Participants are encouraged to include any thoughts he or she had while recording these memorial markers and responses. All photographs will be preserved at The New Jersey Historical Society as part of the Historical Society’s permanent record.

In general, the Historical Society is looking for materials related to events commemorating or honoring people lost on September 11th or materials concerning those responded with assistance. We are also interested in printed materials that demonstrate New Jerseyans’ reactions to subsequent American military action.

Written Personal Stories of where you were, what you were thinking, your reactions and actions and those of people around you. The Historical Society is collecting stories from all perspectives and encourages you to participate so that we may create an permanent record of the impact of September 11th and its aftermath on New Jersey and, in the future, may all better understand how our lives were affected. Please send your story including your name and contact information.
