Fly to Freedom: The Art of the Golden Venture Refugees
Open April 10, 2002 to August 24, 2002
Provocative and inspiring exhibition of a selection of 20 magnificent paper sculptures created during the 4-year imprisonment of Chinese refugees who boarded the Golden Venture in search of freedom. Shipwrecked and later detained in York County Prison, Pennsylvania, a group of the survivors used the traditional Chinese art of paper folding to pass the time. What began as a tool for boredom and frustration soon evolved into an astonishing collection of more than 10,000 paper sculptures made of intricate interlocking pieces of magazine pages, paper, toilet paper and newspaper. This exhibition is a fascinating look at Chinese immigration to the United States through the adaption and evolution of Chinese folk art.
