Correspondence, diaries, land surveys and transactions, legal papers, architectural
drawings, wills, poetry, deeds, and indentures pertaining to the Parker family of Perth
Amboy. Includes papers of the following family members: (1) James Parker
(1725-1797), a Perth Amboy lawyer, and an agent for both the East Jersey Proprietors and
the Hunterdon and Sussex County properties of Sir Robert Barker, an absentee British
landlord; (2) James Parker (1776-1868), one of the directors of the Delaware and Raritan
Canal Company; and (3) Cortlandt Parker (1818-1907), a prominent Newark lawyer, active in
Whig and later in Republican politics. Of special note are late eighteenth- and
early nineteenth-century documents pertaining to trade with the West Indies, as well as
petitions and counter-petitions concerning canal construction in Newark in 1837.
Included are documents and correspondence of:
Gift of Charles W. Parker, 1932, and Mrs. Emily F. Parker, 1958.
Processed as part of the "Farm to City" project funded by a grant
from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
