-- Daniel Dean, undertaker Collection, 1820, 1848-1875

MG 95

Daniel Dean, undertaker Collection, 1820, 1848-1875, .25 linear ft. (161 items.)

The collection comprises three series (seemingly)? connected by the role of Theodore Pierson (1813-1901) as legal executor or “assignee.” Series I consists of a daybook and records (1848-1862) of Daniel Dean, an undertaker from Springfield Township (Union County) and his estate papers (dated 1862) for which Theodore Pierson  was “assignee” (Ziba H. Sickley, Justice of  the Peace). The daybook lists accounts with family names and charges for “day work.” Estate papers record settlements for outstanding payments for walnut and mahogany coffins, digging graves, shrouds, silk gloves and other sundries.

Series II: Estate papers of John C. Sickley (sometimes Sickly), a resident of Springfield Township (Union County) who died in 1865, for which Theodore Pierson was the executor. Invoices, receipts and documents record settlements for outstanding payments, personal property distributions, the records of his possessions for a public auction, and interest paid from the estate to his wife, Mary C. Sickley, through 1875.

Series III consists of additional papers (from Theodore Pierson)? including a Land Grant certificate (Nov. 27, 1820) from the War of 1812 signed by President James Monroe, to Stephen M. Woodruff (heir to Aaron Woodruff).
