Jonathan Valentine was born on November 18, 1766, and was the proprietor of a general store in Turkey (now New Providence), New Jersey. He and his wife Abigail had at least two daughters: Betsey (ca. 1792-1792) and Sarah (ca. 1796-1797). The family attended the New Providence Presbyterian Church. After his death on April 8, 1801, Valentine's estate was estimated at ₤273.4.8.

Jonathan Valentine’s account book contains records from his general store in Turkey, New Jersey from the years 1791-1796. Accounts are labeled with the name of the customer and each entry includes date, items bartered or sold, and price. Typical items sold include tea, lace, spirits, and tobacco. The book is labeled "IV, 1791, Book A" and does not contain an index.
