Summary:
Chiefly legal papers of Amzi Dodd who
practiced law in Newark, New Jersey from 1817 until his death. He also
served as Prosecutor of the Pleas for Essex County, and as a member of the
General Assembly, 1826-1827, and Senate, 1829, of New Jersey. Dodd was a
member and Judge Advocate of the Essex Brigade of Militia, 1810-1823, and both a
Freemason and National Republican during his adult life. Included are
materials relative to Moses Bigelow, Joseph C. Hornblower, Alexander C.
McWhorter, William Pennington, David Bayard Ogden, and Smith Scudder.
There are also legal papers pertaining to the cases of Thomas Gibbons vs. Aaron
Ogden, 1816-1823; the Morris Canal and Banking Company, 1826-1827; the New
Jersey Railroad and Transportation Company, 1833; and the patent suit of John
Warner vs. David Flagg, 1826-1834. Dodd is not to be confused with his
nephew Amzi Dodd (1823-1913).
