Summary:

Concerns Smith's participation in the expedition to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion, serving from September 10 to December 31, 1794 as a private in Captain William Steele's Troop of Light Dragoons, 1st Cavalry Regiment from Essex County.

Gift of Edgar Williams.

 

Biographical Note:

Jonas Smith (1773-1846), a resident of Orange, New Jersey, served during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 as a private in Captain William Steele’s Troop of Light Dragoons, 1st Calvary Regiment from Essex County.  He married Elizabeth Tucker in 1809.

 

Provenance Note:

This volume was the gift of Edgar Williams, date unknown.

 

Scope and Content Note:

This volume is a diary kept by Jonas Smith on the "Pennsylvania Expedition" to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion dating from September 11 to December 31, 1894.  His daily entries include the number of miles covered by the troop and the towns in which they stopped for the night.
