Stanford Pharmacy, Newark, N.J. Record Books, 1853-1905. 11 vols.

      Collection of record books (1853-1905) from the Stanford Pharmacy in Newark (Essex  Co.: N.J.) The ledger dated 1853-1856 was kept by the first proprietor, Dr. Luther G. Thomas, who founded the pharmacy in 1852 and later served as an army surgeon during the Civil War. When he did not return, William H. Stanford took over until his death in 1915.

The ledger books, 1853-1856 and 1865-1871, list date, customer, some treatments and many products and sundries sold including: box of pills, brandy, camphor, castile soap, cigars, cream of tartar,  elixir opium, emery paper, gum drops, magnesium, pumice, quinine pills, toothache drops, turpentine, strychnia, and in one instance “gonorrhoea.” Customers include W. Caulfield, N. Doremus, J.A. Rankin, and Nehemiah Tichenor, as well as many Newark businesses: Alling Bros., Bentley & Briant, Alm Jeroloman & Co., Krementz & Co., Miller Bros., Smillie & Dorrance, Kent Simoni & Co., Swinnerton Bros.

     Prescription books in nine volumes, 1892-1905, consist of pasted-in prescription forms from physicians to their patients with treatment dates and pharmacy inventory numbers. Prescriptions include: argyrol, bicarbonate of  soda, bromide, codeine, digitalis, eucalyptus, heroin, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, morphine sulpher,  peptonoids, phosphate, potassium, quinine pills, vaseline, zinc oxide. Most prescription forms do not show names of physician or patient, but the names of  many Newark doctors include: J.Henry Clark, William S. Disbrow, William Glatzmayer, Eleanor Haines,  W.H. Martland, John M. Rand, J.W. Read, Hugh P. Roden, R.H. Rogers, F.W. Thum, H.J.F. Wallhauser, Aaron Ward, George S. Ward, and Charles Young. Also, prescriptions from Universal Workmen’s Sick and Death Benefit Fund, Newark Charitable Eye & Ear Infirmary, St. Michael’s Hospital, and the clinic at St. Barnabas.

include Newark businesses: Alling Bros., Bentley & Briant,

Durand & Co., Alm Jeroloman & Co., Krementz & Co., Miller

Bros., Nester & Redway,  Kent Simoni & Co., Smillie &

Dorrance, A.J. Stackhouse, and Swinnerton Bros.

         

Prescription Books: Medical prescription forms pasted into nine volumes,

with dates and pharmacy inventory numbers
