William Cheesman (d. ca. 1766) was a yeoman in Waterford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. He and his wife, Sarah, seemed to have no surviving children, for in his will which was dated March 1, 1764 and proved on January 30, 1766, Cheesman left his nieces and nephews as his heirs. He also appointed Jeremiah Jones, his nephew, and Samuel Blackwood, a friend, as the executors of his estate. The latter withdrew from that role in December 1765. Sources: Archives of the State of New Jersey, Series I, Vol. XXXIII, Vol. IV of Calendar of Wills, pg. 77.
The title of the collection was changed from Cheesman-Cox Family Papers to William Cheesman Papers at the time of processing. The source of this collection is not known.
These papers, dating from 1759-1784, consist of bonds and receipts from William Cheesman and his estate. Four of the nine receipts in the collection are for money received from William Cox (fl. 1763-1768).
