Provenance Note:

This collection was purchased in 1986 and assigned the accession number A 86-15.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of a cashbook and an account book dating from 1750-1797.  The cashbook contains English records dating from 1750-1754 and 1794-1797, which lists customers (passengers?) under the heading ‘journey,’ or ‘cash for journey,’ and price.  There are other notations, some listing places in Asia, the South Pacific, and South America and others discussing bible stories such as "An Account of Noah’s Son" and "The Dimention (sic) of the lands of Palestine."  The connection between this cashbook and Stephen Brant is unclear.

The second volume is an account book kept by Stephen Brant from 1774-1794.  Each account has entries for the date, transaction and cost.  Brant sold hay, pigs, rye, rum, tools, and his labor.  He mended and made shoes, altered carts, joined shingles, and worked at the sawmill.  His customers included a number of prominent Morris County residents including Phineas Beach, Calvin Green, Jacob Green (1769-1854), Daniel Kitchel, Samuel Tuttle, John Young (1758-1809), Congers, Millers, Corys, Genungs, and Fairchilds.  There is also a notation for his payment to William Burnet for boarding at Burnet’s home.
