Summary:
Documents 19th
century New Jersey citizens interest in collecting family
photographs and collecting the images of 19th century prominent
political and military leaders. The Photograph Album collection
consists of 71 albums. Included are ornate 19th century albums
with cabinet cards or carte de visite photographs, albums of
homes, early 20th century albums consisting of travel or vacation
photographs by New Jersey residents. Many of the albums include
prominent New Jersey, national politicians, and Civil War
soldiers, officers or generals. Many of the photo albums
are related to one family, and many more have no identification. Large groups of these albums contain the images of unidentified
men, women and children taken during 1850-1880. Families with
identified albums include Moore, Drew, Dennis, Dilts, Bruen,
Beebe, Ward, Connet, Douglas, Waddell and Canfield. Civil War era
albums with images of war heroes, national and New Jersey
politicians, judges and ministers include the Charles Perrin
Smith album, the G.W. Mindil album, Phil Kearney Post Album,
"Our Generals," the Marcus Ward album, the Kamerschaft
album, and others. Albums of note include the Governor Franklin
Murphy albums related to New Jersey Military at Sea Girt (with
Theodore Roosevelt) and the New Jersey exhibits and buildings at
the 1904 Columbian Exposition in St. Louis; Princeton College
Class albums (1879), Senator Joseph Frelinghuysen's album regarding Rice
Home Plantation in South Carolina; Palisades views along the
Hudson in 1907; and the Pageant Album with young people dressed
up in costumes portraying classical and patriotic scenes
(ca.1916). Arranged
