NEW JERSEY EPHEMERA COLLECTION , 1800-present. 20.5 ln. ft. MG 1367

 

Arranged by ephemera type and then chronologically.

 

The Ephemera Collection is an open collection of collected printed matter relating mostly to New Jersey. Included are menus, business cards, invitations, greeting cards, programs, fugitive items, and scrapbooks.  The Menus, (1840-present. 2 ft).consist of food selections of New Jersey restaurants, clubs, banquets and other business' serving food.  The Business cards, (ca, 1870s-1990s 2.25 ft). and trade cards include product information or advertisements for food, soap, patent medicine, and clothing from New Jersey, the U.S. and Europe.  Also includes cards for Speakeasys during Prohibition and the Clark Thread Co. of Newark. The Invitations (1800-1990's, 1.5 ft) consist of invitations to New Jersey weddings, social functions, political events and other events.  The Programs, (1825-1990's, 3.5 ft) are for  theater shows, musical events, parades, monument unveilings, and other events. The Programs are for programs in Newark (1870s-1990s) and elsewhere. The Greeting cards. (19th-20th century. 2.5 ft). are for Christmas, Easter, New Years, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. and Birthdays. Also cards concerning sympathy, railroads and Westminster Lesson cards. The miscellaneous or Fugitive ephemera (19th & 20th century. 4 25 ft) include admission tickets,  announcements, bill heads, instruction booklets, toy or gift books, book plates, calling cards, calendars, certificates, dance cards, tallies for dances, Newark Ward election tickets, membership cards & lists, nature scenes, Newark street guides/advertisements, observances, poems, election campaign flyers, .school functions (Phillipsburg, 1890-1915 and elsewhere), stamps, stock certificates, tax forms, election and railroad tickets, railroad timetables and transfers, tokens of merit, World War I materials, and World War II ration books. The Scrapbooks (21 volumes, late 19th century, 4 ft), consist mostly of collected ephemera especially trade cards and greeting cards, engravings clipped from magazines, and a variety of colorful 19th century printed items.

EPHEMERA Scrapbooks, 19th century. 21 volumes.

 

The Ephemera Scrapbooks consist mostly of albums constructed by late 19th century New Jerseyeans. These items deals more with business cards, prints (colored and black and white) and other materials. The ephemeral scrapbooks deal less with newsclippings.

Prior to 1995 these scrapbooks were collected by the Museum department because  the printed cards and “stickers” in the albums made them appear more object-oriented rather than informational. The Scrapbook collection (MG 1494) was collected by the library mostly from scrapbooks filled with newsclippings, photographs, and other materials..                       

 

Box 35/1.         1. Tangager Composition Book. 180 cigar bands and 13 postage stamps.

Box 38 /1.        2. Abbie May Vanderveer Album (Pluckamin, NJ), 1884? Painted portrait of young girl on the album cover. “40 pages of 553” assorted business, greeting and calling cards carefully arranged and including: animals, fruits, babies, landscapes, holidays, seasons, flowers and humorous and religious themes.

Box 35 /2.        3. 1954.268: A. Sturges Card Album, 1881. (From E.H. Sturges?) Business cards from NY, Boston, CT, PA, Texas and Virginia. Scenes of hotels; tickets; mostly cards from dry goods companies. The New York Times 1887 calendar card. 5 pages, many loose cards.

Box 35/3.         4. C2869: Card Album. (Same album as #3; no inscription.) Business cards; Easter, Christmas, New Year and birthday cards. 10 pages.

Box 35/4.         5. Scrap Book (blue). Late 1800s. Business and greeting cards for dry goods stores, shoes, confectioners; holiday cards. Many cigar box wrappers (loose).

Box 35/5.         6. 1955.88: Scrap Book (green), “Katie Bomm”? (on last page), 1878. Decal stickers of cupids, flowers, birds, dogs, butterflies, horses, children and fruit baskets. Also enclosed,  MG #866: “Called to the Rescue,” picture woven in silk, 1881, and assorted unfinished home-made embroidered bookmarks.

Box 36/1.         7. Album, 1880s-1890s. Broken spine. Newspaper clippings of marriages and poems on front and back covers. Business cards, decal stickers, newspaper stories and cut-outs. A postcard: Gift to NJHS from Alfred L. Snyder?, 11/3/1950 (Shroudsburg, PA)

Box 36/2.         8. Margery Austen Ryerson, High St., Newark, Scrap Album. C. 1885. Broken spine. Business cards for dry goods and holiday cards.

Box 38/2.         9. Scrap Album (pink), “Alice” (on inside envelope). Girl’s collages of newspaper and magazine cut-outs with her own drawings. Some paper dolls, animal cut-outs, soldiers and story-telling collage pictures. Collage scenes of “bath room,” “day nursery,” parlor and the kitchen.

Box 36/3.         10. Cornelia Paterson Boggs Album, July - August 28, 1897. Business and greeting cards, but primarily magazine and newspaper cut-outs of pictures, including: animals, cartoons, historic places and hotels (the Catskills, West Point, Coney Island), famous people (Jenny Lind, William McKinley, Queen Victoria), residences, trains and ships, and graphics.

Box 37/1.         11.  C3, UC-10108: Album (brown suede). Copies of prints (etchings and engravings) of the English countryside and its churches, cathedrals, colleges, historic buildings and residences; English towns and sites of interest.

Box 37/2.         12. Album (blue and yellow marble). Commercial calendars (1896?-1904) and large business cards; Peter Henderson & Co. (NY) plant catalogues (cover pages), florals.

Box 38/3.         13.  Album (large blue with portrait of lady in upper left corner), 1878? Business cards, including New Home Sewing Machine Co., Prudential Insurance, Easter cards and postcards. One large print, published by Geo. Stinson, 1878, “Can’t You Talk” (child and dog).

Box 41/1.         14. Scrapbook “Good Bye” (Brown with flying balloon on cover), c. 1900. Postcards and some business cards. Sports, landscapes, the A&P, flowers and children. Magazine pictures by Norman Rockwell, Charles W. Simpson (Ladies’ Home Journal) and others.

Box  38/4.        15.  Atta Drew Scrapbook (Millburn, NJ), late 1800s. Business cards, including Drew’s Yeast Powder, Stoutenburghs (Newark), the A&P; cats, flowers, babies and birds. Also Christmas, Easter and New Year’s cards.

Box 39/1.         16. 1968.11: Mrs. Jesse I. Taylor Album (Bloomfield, NJ), 3/15/1884. Approx. 100 pages of business cards, some in french, including dry goods, clothiers, furniture, milliners, shoes, foods and pharmacy products and wallpaper hangers. Sunshine Publishers, holiday cards and themes: cartoons, animals, cupids and lovers, babies and people.

Box 39/2.         17.C2914: Mrs. Mary Anne Dell Moffit Card and Scrapbook. (Born 1825, NYC - died 1891. Lived in Mt. Vernon, NY.) Given to NJHS by her granddaughter, Miss Anna L. Moore, 96 Haddon Pl., Upper Montclair, NJ, May 1948.) Newspaper clippings of historic events and items of interest. Map of lower Manhattan (Harper’s Weekly, 1873); decal stickers of the states (U.S.) and the world flags; obituaries and factual news and trivia.

Box 42/1.         18.  Album (large red velvet). Approx. 50 pages of business cards including J&P Coats’ Threads, clothiers, bakeries, glassware and milliners; Metropolitan Life Insurance. Themes: birds, babies, flowers and sonnets.

Box 40/1.         19.  1954.269: Album (large marble). Copies of prints (etchings and engravings) of scenes of cities (NY, Boston, Philadelphia) and historic places, events and people (from Appleton’s Journal, Sartain’s Magazine). Also, five Japanese landscape prints on rice? Paper.

Box 40/2.         20. “Gems of Beauty” Album. A book of prints and poems published by Longman & Co. (London, 1836) and Appleton & Co. (NY), with business cards and postcards pasted in; horses, snowy scenes, Easter, children, fruits and flowers.

Box 40/3.         21.  UC-2169: Miss Marsh Scrap Book, Volume 2, August 1910. Newspaper clippings of historic events; magazine articles such as “The Naval Campaign of 1776 on Lake Champlain” (Scribner’s, 1898), articles from Munsey’s Magazine (1902) pictures and news clippings from Boston, West Point and other Revolutionary War sites; The New York Tribune (1895); The Evening Post (1901); scenes of Manhattan.
