The Second Dragoon Regiment was organized on December 12, 1776 and was the first cavalry regiment directly organized by the Continental Army. The Continental Congress appointed Elisha Sheldon (fl. 1776-1780) lieutenant colonel and commanding officer of the regiment. He was ordered to enlist six troops to form his regiment at Wethersfield, Connecticut. One of the first officers chosen by Sheldon was Major Benjamin Tallmadge (1754-1835). Tallmadge led the fifth troop of the regiment in the battles of Short Hills (1777), Brandywine (1777), Trenton (1776), Saratoga (1777) and White Plains (1776).
This orderly book, kept by the fifth troop of the Second Dragoon Regiment of the Continental Army, dates from 1782 to 1783 and measures 0.01 linear feet. The fifth troop was commanded by Major Benjamin Tallmadge (1754-1835), whose orders are presented in this book. Rules regarding rations are mentioned at great length, as are orders to officers to participate in court martials. A size roll, which indicates soldiers’ physical characteristics and birthplace also appears in this volume.
