Biographical Note
Peter Middagh, a resident of Hunterdon County in New Jersey, served in the New Jersey Provincial Assembly in the year 1754. In 1760, he acted as paymaster for the New Jersey Regiment.
Middagh's grandfather, Aert Middagh (Meddach), emigrated from Heikop, Utrecht Province, the Netherlands in 1661. His father, Jan Aertsen Middagh, was born in 1662, and married Elizabeth Smit on January 4, 1690. In addition to Peter, they had five other children: Dirck, Catherine, Johannes, Cornelius, and Matthew. Middagh was a member of the Reformed Dutch Church at North Branch, New Jersey, now known as the Readington Church in Readington, New Jersey.

Scope and Content Note
This collection contains the muster rolls, certificate, and receipts of Peter Middagh, covering the years 1733 to 1783.
The first of two mustter rolls is dated May 16, 1760; it is the muster roll of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hunt of the New Jersey Regiment, with 150 soldiers listed. In it Hunt attests to seeing "Peter Middagh Pay to the within Mentioned… raised by me for the New Jersey Regiment." Also included is the muster roll of Captain George Coryell from May 17, 1760, which lists fifty-one soldiers that were raised by him, where again Middagh paid each recruit his bounty.
The papers also contain receipts for Middagh's payments of his debts to others, including Cornelius Low, Cornelius Middagh, and Dirck Middagh. Most notable amongst the receipts is one dated May 17, 1760, from Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hunt for 150 pounds proclamation money received as authorized by Act of Assembly; it was levy money for recruiting the soldiers listed in Hunt's aforementioned muster roll. Some receipts are written in Dutch, and are identified accordingly in the container list.
A certificate of attendance at the New Jersey General Assembly session by Middagh in October 1754 completes the collection.
