This Harmonic Society of Newark was the first choral society in Newark and the second in the country to be formed. A group of people met at the Newark Academy on April 23, 1830 and agreed to establish the Society, naming Albert Holbrook its first chair.
There is no information regarding the disbanding of the Society. However, another Society serving the same purpose as the first and also named the Harmonic Society was begun in 1860 and continued for 28 years. This second Society had no connection to the first.
