Captain Lyman F. Barry, Infantry was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Barry on March 12, 1901. Captain Barry came from Budd Lake, New Jersey and from a prominent Jewish family. Barry served in the U.S. Army from at least 1922 to 1945. By 1922 he was a Second Lieutenant and served, both in the United States and overseas, as a Captain during World War II. Barry was the author of A Photo History of the 20th Corps. published by General Colliers.
The Barry collection contains 7 manuscript diaries (415 total pages) written by Captain Barry from 1941-1947. The collection also includes 7 photographs of Barry in uniform from 1922 to 1942. Each diary contains short entries on Barry's day-to-day activities in military service. Barry writes about events ranging from getting his teeth filled to bayonet and rifle practice. Barry also includes accounts of the weather, what books he is reading, and who has written him letters. Barry also used the diaries as an address book and as a way of keeping track of his cash accounts. Barry writes "WAR" on December 7, 1941 and discusses his ambivalent feelings about V-J Day. Other entries include Barry's account of arresting a Nazi Lieutenant and 2 German women. Barry also writes about sightseeing in cities such as Paris and Munich.
