Historical Note

The Columbia Academy served children from the Bergen, New Jersey area from 1790-1857, until it was replaced by the first of three public schools. In 1870, the township of Bergen was absorbed into greater Jersey City, New Jersey.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of nineteen manuscript documents, from 1813-1838, related to the Columbia Academy of Bergen, New Jersey. The majority of the documents are general bills having to do with the maintenance and upkeep of Columbia Academy's facilities. Also included in the collection are several statements describing tuition issues as well as several payment stubs issued to various teachers who worked for Columbia Academy.
