Biographical Note
The Kitchel family is descended from Robert Kitchell (1604-1672) and Margaret Sheaffe (d.1682). The Kitchells, along with their son Samuel, left England in 1639 with the Rev. Henry Whitfield and a group of Puritans refugees. The group first anchored near, what is now, New Haven, Connecticut and later settled as a group in Guilford, Connecticut. In 1766 Robert and Samuel moved their families to New Jersey, where they helped settle Newark.
Stephen Kitchel (d. 1822), son of David Kitchel (1723-1753) and Ruth Tuttle (1713-1780), had two brothers, one of whom died young, and a sister who also died young. Stephen had six children with Hannah Darling. When his father died he inherited half of his fathers homestead in Whippany, New Jersey, Stephen's brother Uzal inherited the other half.
Zenas Kitchel (b.1785), the son of Stephen Kitchel (d. 1822) and Hannah Darling, had three brothers and two sisters all of whom lived to be adults. Zenas had six children with Mary Tuttle. Not much else is known about Zenas Kitchel, although it appears that like his father he was active in his community.
Parkhurst Kitchel is the son of Zenas Kitchel and Mary Tuttle, his date of birth and death are unknown. Parkhurst resided in Whippany with his wife, whose name is unknown, and their three children. He fought in the Civil War; his draft notice is dated September 1864. He survived the war and in 1877 was granted Letters Patent for "improvement in machines for applying powder for the destruction of insects."

Scope and Content Note
This collection includes letters, legal documents and indentures. Items of note include a draft notice (1864) and a patent letter (1877) for Parkhurst Kitchel.
This collection documents the following members of the Kitchel family: Albert, Charles, Ezekiel, F.W., Hannah, Joseph, Samuel, Stephen, Parkhurst, and Zenas. Other individuals who are documented are: Isaac and Johannah Alling, Thomas Bates, Thomas Brown, Abigail Carmon, David Corey, Abraham Fairchild, Jacob and Phebe Gray, Daniel and Anna Phoenix, Benjamin Poft, and Jacob Tappins.

Given to the New Jersey Historical Society by Marion Taylor Wood in August 2003.
Processing Information
All of the documents in this collection are very fragile; many have tears along creases, or are in several pieces. Prior to their acquisition by the New Jersey Historical Society an attempt was made to repair some documents using adhesive tape.
The name Kitchel can also be spelled Kitchell; throughout this collection different family members use the two spellings interchangeably. This finding aid uses the spelling with one "l" throughout the document for several reasons, first, the books on the family use Kitchel, and second, the earliest spelling of the name is with one "l".
