Biographical Note

Harrison W. Gardiner of Roselle, N.J. was a private in Company M, 71st Regiment NJ Volunteers during the Spanish American War. He was reported dead in a newspaper obituary on August 18, 1898. However, he was still alive and returned to Roselle after the war.

Scope and Content Note

This collection includes four letters from the haversack of Private Harrison W. Gardiner, Jr., of Roselle, N.J., Co. M, 71st Regiment NJ Volunteers stationed in Tampa, FL and Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The letters are from Gardiner's friends are arranged chronologically. The first two are from Jessie M. Hixson of New York City. She discusses the false report that claimed Gardiner was missing. The third is from Nellie Wallace of Philadelphia. It discusses the fact that Gardiner had finally been accounted for, as well as how Gardiner's family was coping in Roselle, NJ. The collection also includes a false newspaper obituary for Gardiner. The fourth letter, from Harry Scharf of New York City, responds to this false report.
