Before the first shovel could break through the earth, there were a number of things to consider, including how the Turnpike would relate to the many other existing highways going in and out of New Jersey. This 1948 map from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's first annual report (1949) shows the highways and connections engineers had to take into account.
