Traffic, Traffic, and More Traffic
The General Motors and Cities Service Oil Co. Movies

"[The] journey by motor vehicle across New Jersey [is] difficult, hazardous, slow and nerve-wracking," reported Turnpike consulting engineers Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff in 1949. Indeed, standstill traffic for a "nation of wheels" just wouldn't do. That is the argument made in the excerpts shown here (and on the next page) from two films, one produced by General Motors (GM), the other by Cities Service Oil Co.—both firms that would clearly benefit from more roads and more cars. These segments create a compelling (if self-serving) argument for more and better thoroughfares.
