Stories of workplace teams show how much they
were tied to a sense of place. For example, bowling team names highlighted
the geography of the Garden State—like the “Newark”
Troopers (undoubtedly State Police assigned to the stretch of the Turnpike
near Newark, the state’s largest city) and the “Lincoln Tunnel”
(named for the major conduit between New Jersey and Manhattan, whose third
tube had just opened in 1957).
