Fifties Services
The Corporate View

[view in Media Player] [read narration] [length 3:20]

Not the personal account but the corporate view, this segment from a 1953 film about the Turnpike produced by Cities Service (the company was awarded the initial contract to provide gasoline and services on the New Jersey Turnpike) highlights the “modern,” fast service provided to drivers by nattily uniformed employees. Ask yourself how the customer service experience compares to today.

The film clearly focuses on what Cities Service could provide to travelers; it also offers a glimpse of other aspects of the service area: watch closely for the “Pikette;” in the Turnpike’s earliest years, Pikettes provided travel information to motorists.
