The First Fatality
Tragedy on the Road, Remembered

[see large picture]

After toll collector Harry Laderman was killed in a tragic accident on February 2, 1967—a truck barreled into his tollbooth—the Turnpike Authority named the second Hackensack River Bridge in his honor. They also installed cement blocks in front of booths to act as barriers to prevent further accidents. Laderman was the first Turnpike Authority employee killed in the line of duty.
